Graphic Novel Review: Locke & Key, Vol. 6: Alpha & Omega

Hey there Blogging world!

How’s it going? Is it just me, or does this week feel like the Twilight Zone? What year is it?

Temporal confusion aside, it’s review time!

I just finished the last graphic novel in the Locke & Key series by Joe Hill, volume 6: Alpha & Omega.

I’m buddy reading this series with Misty’s Book Space, and after the last one, I simply couldn’t wait to dig through the last volume and see how everything turned up.

Keep on scrolling for the review!

Blurb:

The shadows have never been darker and the end has never been closer. Turn the key and open the last door; it’s time to say goodbye.

The Review:

Holy moly was this a roller coaster ride!

This is the last graphic novel in the series, and I had high expectations. Luckily, this novel met them and went a couple notches further!

Dodge, now inhabiting Bode’s body, has a grand scheme of power, and its up to the Locke family and others to stop him.

It’s hard to know where to start, that’s how much this book thrilled me, so I’m just gonna stick to my usual format.

The artwork was handled masterfully as usual. Huge kudos there.

The characters were great too. Kinsey and Tyler are pretty much on their own at the beginning, and they do the best they can given their situation. I do wish they would’ve wised up a bit earlier, but I’ve already stated that in other volume reviews so I’ll stop being grumpy. There were also a number of other more supportive characters that got involved that really made the difference and kept things entertaining.

And the plot? Oh lordy. This volume was a dark one. I mean it, so if you’re going to read this, be prepared for some terrible times. At the same time, I couldn’t keep my eyes off the pages. I enjoyed watching Dodge’s plan unfold, and the gruesome happenings around it, even if it made me cringe a little here and there. I really liked the ending (not spoiling anything, I swear!), and now I’m a little bit sad this series is over because I know I’ll have a hard time finding something that’ll compare.

In the end, I’m so glad I gave this series a chance. It’s dark and gritty, but also filled with magic and wonder. Joe Hill is seriously talented, and I’ll be keeping my eyes out for other works of his going forward, especially graphic novels. Give this series a read, you won’t be disappointed!

That’s a Wrap!
