Book Review: The Night Gardener

Hello Readers!

Winter is in full effect! Well, at least where I am here in Kansas City. The past week I’ve been feeling like poor old Jack Torrance.

Now I don’t mind some cool weather, but this is advanced cold (I’m talking below zero, people!), so I haven’t been getting out much at all. Which means I’ve been busy reading to my heart’s content. And that means it’s time for another book review!

Today I’m reviewing The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier.

I decided to take a brief one-book break from The Overthrow series to whittle down my physical TBR from my bookshelves. I found a physical copy of The Night Gardener a couple months ago at a thrift store and had to have it, but I’m trying to do better about reading the books I actually own, so here we are.

This book’s synopsis screamed spooky, and I dove right in hoping for the best. Alright, on to the review!

Blurb

The Night Gardener follows two abandoned Irish siblings who travel to work as servants at a creepy, crumbling English manor house. But the house and its family are not quite what they seem. Soon the children are confronted by a mysterious spectre and an ancient curse that threatens their very lives. With Auxier’s exquisite command of language, The Night Gardener is a mesmerizing read and a classic in the making.

The Review

This book was so much fun!

It’s about two Irish children Molly and Kip. They were on a boat with their parents that shipwrecked, and after staying at an orphanage Molly lucked out in procuring employment at a house on the edge of civilization. The only thing is, it’s bizarre. The family is extremely pale, there’s a strange tree practically embedded into the property, and strange noises echo through the house at night. Should Molly and Kip rough it out in the name of stability, or should they cut their losses and scramble?

There were so many things to love about this novel.

For me the winning factor was Molly and Kip themselves. Talk about charming! These characters had my heart from page one. Molly is strong willed with her secrets while Kip is more soft spoken and suffers from a leg disability. Both of them were scrappy characters, and there’s always been a special place in my heart for that kind of character so I absolutely loved it. The brogue in the dialogue was really great.

The atmosphere of this book was great too. It had this dreary, dark feel to it that was intoxicating.

The chapters were nice and short, and the plot was full of mystery, twists and turns, and a supernatural element that was fun to figure out chapter by chapter. Everything about this novel was really thought out and executed flawlessly.

If you’re looking for a fun, unforgettable middle grade book, you can’t go wrong with this one!

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!
