Movie Review: Chaos Walking (2021)

Hello Fellow Travellers,

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve had a good week. Keep plugging, you’re almost there! I’ve been feeling the drain of the daily grind so hard this week, so I’m going to keep things short.

Today I’m sharing my review of Chaos Walking by Lions Gate Films.

For my grad school assignment, reviewing YA movies is just one of the things I need to do, and I was excited to find one in the scifi and fantasy realm. Also, I’m now even more determined to read the book series by Patrick Ness.

So, how’d this movie end up? Let’s find out!

Blurb

Two unlikely companions embark on a perilous adventure through the badlands of an unexplored planet as they try to escape a dangerous and disorienting reality where all thoughts are seen and heard by everyone.

The Review

Todd Hewitt lives a solitary life on New World in a colony of men with his male relatives. That peace is short-lived when a ship comes crashing from the sky and he encounters the first girl he’s ever seen. She’s strange, mysterious, and most of all her thoughts don’t transmit publicly like all the men on this world. As the woman makes an escape from the custody of the mayor of the colony, Todd finds himself helping her to contact her superiors in space for assistance, unwittingly embarking on a mission that will challenge everything he knows and trusts.

Action, fantasy, and scifi awesomeness abound in this entertaining and riveting film.

From the very start I was intrigued. Todd Hewitt and his male counterparts in the colony involuntary broadcast their thoughts, leaving very little to the imagination of what they’re thinking. This helps the watcher identify with him without needing an abundance of dialogue and can manifest imagery when emotions are high. Curious and bored of his lifestyle in the colony, the extraterrestrial appearance of Viola is a welcome change and spurs him to action when she is in danger for simply being a young woman.

I really enjoyed Viola and Todd’s interactions. Todd struggles to control his thoughts towards Viola throughout the movie, which adds an element of humor to lighten things up. Given Viola’s interactions with the other men of this world, she is skeptical of his intentions but learns to open up as events portray his good intentions.

The scifi element in this movie was subtle but engaging. I wanted to know everything about this world and what happened since its initial colonization. Hints and facts are dropped here and there, and given that this is also a YA book series I’m curious to see what additional information I might learn. The pacing of this film was fast and kept me on the edge of my seat as Todd and Viola bolt from place to place for safety and to ultimately meet her goal of contact.

I’d highly recommend this movie for any lover of scifi, action, and fantasy.

That’s A Wrap!

Well that’s it for this movie review. I hope you enjoyed it!

Have you watched this movie? Are there other similar movies you’ve seen that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!

Have a great day!

  1. Great review, Jonny. I think I would have enjoyed this movie a lot more if I hadn’t read the books first. The world and the thoughts of the men being visible to all was such a great hook in the book. If I’d seen the movie first, I’m sure I would have read the books immediately after the credits rolled!

    • Thank you friend! Yeah, I purposely didn’t read the books first because I always end up not liking the movie as much. Is the book series good?

      • I enjoyed it without falling in love with it, if that makes sense. There are some really cool ideas, but I was disappointed in the direction of some of the plot points.

      • Yeah I can understand that. It wasn’t perfect by any means but definitely enjoyable.
