Buddy Reads & Rants: Wolfsong (Jonny Pongratz & Misty’s Book Space)

Hello Blogging World!

Jonny

Hi, I’m Jonny. I always run hot. Does that make me an honorary werewolf? I wanna join the club!

Misty

Hi again. I’ve always been a diehard vampire lover but after reading this book I love werewolves so much more now.

This buddy read and rant is for Wolfsong (Green Creek #1) by TJ Klune

Blurb:

Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.

Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road. The little boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the little boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the little boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane.

Ox was seventeen when he found out the little boy’s secret and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega.

Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces.

It’s been three years since that fateful day—and the boy is back. Except now he’s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

Buddy Read Book Rant:

Jonny

Hey Misty. So, how’d you like Wolfsong overall? I gotta admit, I’ve only read a few werewolf stories (vampires are more my thing), but I thought it was really good! The werewolf system made sense, and the characters had a lot of depth to them. Plenty of action too, so it pretty much ticked all the boxes for me.

Misty

I ended up loving it. Vampire stories have been my favorite for as long as I can remember but I have read a good bit of werewolf books as well but I have to say this one is probably my favorite.

I do have to mention that this book was a little over 500 pages but it felt like the longest short book ever. I feel like something could have been cut out but at the same time I feel like we needed everything we got. Also I was a little skeptical about where the author was going with the romance at first. I genuinely thought it was going to ruin the book for me but it ended up being handled really well and I didn’t get that ick feeling I was expecting.

You said you thought you knew what my issues were with it. Was you right?

Jonny

Yay! I’m so glad you enjoyed it too. Yeah, I’ve always been more of an Anne Rice kinda guy (may she rest), but this buddy read and Wolfland were really stellar and are changing my view a bit.

I felt the same way. When things slowed down a bit here and there it tended to drag in spots and I kind of just wanted to move things along, but then we wouldn’t have had as much depth without it.

Phew! My fear was that you would have taken the romance the wrong way as many others had. I plead the fifth to checking out other reviews and many of them mention how appalled they were that there was romance with their age gap, but they don’t actually act on anything until both are at least 18 years of age so I had no problem with it. So my guess was wrong!

Misty

I didn’t read Anne Rice until last year or the year before I can’t remember now. I’m glad this one worked out for you. I know our last couple picks haven’t been the greatest.

It did drag a bit here and there but I truly don’t know how it could have been cut down any. Every time I put this book down I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was so obsessed.

I admit when I first started getting an inkling as to where the author was taking the romance I went to Google to see if I was right. I get why it would bother people but they were both well into adulthood before anything romantic even started to happen.

Jonny

Oh, well I’m glad you gave it a chance! One day I plan on rereading The Vampire Chronicles, although I only ever got to book 5 I believe (I think it was Tale of the Body Thief).

No worries! Picks are always kind of random luck anyways. I’m just glad we hit the jackpot on this one!

Yeah, everything did end up having significance in the end, so I actually wouldn’t change anything about it. Haha, me too! I loved the darker themes they went into and how Klune didn’t shy away from bloody battles and action (I’ve always made a point to call out Stephanie Meyer for avoiding any battle scene in the Twilight series). The Omegas were creepy! That paired really well with the romance, loss, and grief along the way. Definitely gave me all the feels. I do think I still love House in the Cerulean Sea just a bit more, but it may be nostalgia talking. They’re both equally amazing.

Haha, we were both a little worried. Well I’m glad he pulled it off in a way that wasn’t super taboo. I had to drop other reads for things like that (*cough cough* Let the Right One In was just super gross to me).

I’m so curious about where this series is going to go. Wanna hear my predictions?

Misty

I only read the first book and I liked it but I’m not in any hurry to continue that series.

So true!! I’m glad this one was a hit for us too!!

I loved everything about this book. He definitely isn’t afraid to tackle things whether that be action scenes or the hard hitting topics. It’s been so long since I read that series I don’t really remember much about it. This is my 3rd book by Klune and honestly I might have to say this is my favorite now.

I’m glad he went about it in a way that didn’t feel gross. I don’t think I’ve read that book or ever heard of it before.

I’m super excited for the next book. I’ve already put a hold on it at my library just waiting on it to get to my library so I can pick it up. I’ve read the synopsis for the second book already so I know what that one’s going to be about but I don’t know where he’s going to go with it. I would love to hear your predictions.

Jonny

Totally cool. If I remember correctly, those books are a little dense.

Yeah, that’s what I love about Klune. He’s not afraid to go outside his typical box in his writing, and it really paid off with this one. Haha, fair!

Oh, Let the Right One In is a famous vampire horror movie and book based on a vampire that was turned as a young girl. Her caretaker is an old pedophile. I watched the original movie and the US-made one (the original is way better) and it hardly even mentions that he is so it was fine, but the book focused on it a lot more and I couldn’t stand it.

Oh wow, nice! Hopefully you’ll get access to this one easier since there’s bound to be less of a line. The first book is always hardest to get your hands on if it’s popular, at least in my experience. I’ll do my best to read it along with you as long as I can balance it with grad school. Spring break is coming up, so that would be a perfect time for me to take a brief breather.

Okay, so I think that Ox’s dad really isn’t dead. I think he’ll tie into the other books in some way that expands on things perhaps. That’s my main guess. I also think there might be more deaths of some characters going forward. I think it’s gonna be a real tearjerker.

Misty

Yeah that definitely doesn’t sound like something I want to read.

From what I saw there are several available I just have to wait for it to make its way to my library. I wish I could see exactly what library it was coming from that way I could get an idea of how long it will take to get to me but alas I’m not that lucky lol.

I didn’t even consider that his dad might still be alive. I could see that being a possibility but I really hope it’s not. I really did not like his dad. I definitely see it being a tearjerker as well and I’m not ready for that. I don’t want anymore of my favorites to die.

Jonny

Man, it was cringy in the worst way. I’ll just stick to the movies.

Yay! Yeah, my library will note what locations have a copy, but they won’t say which one it’s coming from so it’s a guessing game over here too. Lame!

Oh, I hated his dad. Hopefully he’s truly six feet under and we won’t have to deal with that, but I definitely see a lot more heartache coming. We’ll just have to brace ourselves!

Thanks again for reading this with me. We found a lovely series!

Misty

That’s how it is with my library system as well. It’s very annoying.

Thank you for waiting so long for me to get it and finish it. Hopefully this next one won’t take me as long.

Jonny

Seriously. Just give us an estimate! Mehhh.

No worries at all. Grad school forced my hand on this one. I hope the next one’s as good!

Misty

That would be enough for me.

Even though we didn’t read them at the same time as m still glad we were able to do our discussion on it.

Jonny

Me too. Can’t wait for the next one!

That’s A Wrap!

  1. I’m so glad you both enjoyed this book. Great discussion!

    • Thanks! I highly recommend this one for sure. Lots of dark elements in there to love.

  2. I had so much fun reading and discussing this one with you. I’m still waiting on Ravensong but it says it’s in transit so hopefully it won’t be too much longer.

    • Me too! Luckily my library has an ebook copy ready to go, but I can definitely wait. Grad school has plenty to keep me busy.

      • I think I’ll wait it out and see if I can handle it. I’m supposed to be reading this one book for class but I’ve been procrastinating.

      • I think it’s called Firekeeper’s Daughter

      • I’m had that in one of my TBRs not that long ago but I never got around to reading it. Look forward to hearing what you think of it.

      • I did get a sneak peek of the first page and it’s gripping so I have high hopes
