Buddy Reads & Rants: Ravensong (Jonny Pongratz & Misty’s Book Space)
Hello Blogging World!
Jonny
Hey there, I’m Jonny! Before we start, I’ve got a little werewolf joke for ya. How do you support a werewolf’s YouTube Channel? Lycan subscribe! 😂
Misty
I’m Misty your resident romance lover. I can’t really beat Jonny’s intro. It’s so cheesy it’s funny. 😂
Jonny
Lol I love my dad jokes!
This buddy read and rant is for Ravensong (Green Creek #2) by TJ Klune.

***Note: If you haven’t read Wolfsong, the first book in this series, you might want to skip reading the blurb for this book because it might contain slight spoilers.
Blurb:
Ravensong is the second book in the Green Creek Series, the beloved fantasy romance sensation by New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, about love, loyalty, betrayal, and family.
“Complex and startling… Green Creek is the perfect setting.” —Charlaine Harris
The Bennett family has a secret: They’re not just a family, they’re a pack. Ravensong is Gordo Livingstone’s story.
Gordo Livingstone never forgot the lessons carved into his skin. Hardened by the betrayal of a pack that left him behind, he sought solace in the garage in his tiny mountain town, vowing never again to involve himself in the affairs of wolves.
It should have been enough.
It was, until the wolves came back, and with them, Mark Bennett. And when his town is caught in the jaws of a beast, Gordo is summoned back into the life that left him.
“Gordo, you must rise. For your pack. For us. I must ask you to become the witch to the wolves.”
Now, a year later, Gordo has once again found himself the witch of the Bennett pack. Green Creek has settled after the death of Richard Collins, and Gordo constantly struggles to ignore Mark and the song that howls between them.
But time is running out. Something is coming. And this time, it’s coming from within.
The Green Creek Series is for adult readers.

Buddy Read Book Rant:
Jonny
Thanks so much for all of your patience Misty! Grad school really slowed me down on being able to read this one as fast as I would’ve liked. So we both loved the first book of this series. How did you feel overall about this one?
Misty
No worries. I know your plate is full with everything you got going on so I don’t mind taking whatever time you need. It has been a while since I finished this so you might have to jog my memory on something. I loved this one just as much as I did the first book.
I admit that at first I had to get used to it being from Gordo’s perspective and not Ox’s but even that little hiccup didn’t affect my overall enjoyment of the book. What about you? How did you feel about this one?
Jonny
Thanks, friend! I liked this one just a little bit less than the first but I still had a really great time. Definitely going to buddy read the next one with you soon!
Yeah, I agree. At first I was shocked it wasn’t in Ox’s POV, but it ended up fine really.
I loved getting to know Gordo more. Just like with Ox, he has an extensive backstory and we got to experience the events that made him the way he is now. He’s flawed and has some serious trust issues, but it made sense given what happened and made him more realistic. I’ve been through something similar in the distant past, but I handled it differently than he did. I was rooting for him and his love interest Mark the whole time. Yay for gay werewolves!
Misty
What made you like it less?? I can’t wait to read the next one with you. I’m obsessed with these characters and just need more. I’m going to be sad when we reach the end of the series.
I loved getting Gordo’s backstory as well and I also loved that we got another perspective on some of what happened in the first book. At first I didn’t think I was going to like that because I thought it would be like reading the same thing again but it wasn’t like that at all. He definitely has some major trust issues and I totally get it. He should have trust issues after that but I do have to say I felt like he was a little bit too stubborn. I would have liked a little more time with them actually being together. I’m sorry you had a similar experience but it seems like you are the better for it now!!
Jonny
Okay so there were two main things that diminished the experience for me. One you already mentioned was Gordo’s stubbornness. Look, I’m a Taurus so I totally get the whole stubborn thing, but I felt like he resisted too much. I understood he was kind of bitter and resentful but it nearly took an act of god to make him loosen up a little. I think it should’ve been dialed back just a little bit. It got really frustrating after a while and I kind of wanted to smack him upside the head and say “Snap out of it!”
Another thing was the back and forth with the human pack could get a little too goofy at times when there were more important things like impending doom and whatnot happening. It didn’t happen all that often, but I wondered if they were really taking things seriously enough, kind of the opposite of Gordo. I still love them all though! I’m basically picking at minor things on this one.
I agree with you on Gordo and Mark. We need more time to see them together. I’d love to see a softer side of Gordo in the next book. I wonder whose POV we’re going to get! Oh, my past trauma has definitely made me more empathetic and caring towards others. Me and my friends are all very huggy, happy people and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Were you surprised by any of the betrayals in the book?
Misty
Both of those are very valid points but they didn’t bother me like they did you. Yes Gordo’s stubborness was excessive and I wanted to slap him and say get over it already but I was still fully hooked to the story and as for the humans I actually liked that they added a little bit of humor to the story otherwise it would have been all doom and gloom and I don’t want that.
It looks like the next one is going to be Robbie’s story and I’m not as excited about having his pov but I’m am still excited to read it. Hmm betrayals this is where my memory is failing me. I remember only one betrayal and I can’t say who because of spoilers. I will say the one I remember didn’t surprise me at all because they had rubbed me the wrong way since the first book.
Jonny
Fair point. Without the human pack it would have been quite a bit more depressing, so these were really just small things that irked me, but nothing that ruined the story for me. I’d gladly read it again. TJ Klune just does that to me.
Hmm, that’s interesting. From what we’ve seen of Robbie it doesn’t seem like he’d have too much of a story to tell, but I think his perspective may be different enough to be enjoyable because unlike the other wolves he’s been shuffling around different packs for so long. Haha yeah, the biggest betrayal I saw coming a mile away, while the other minor betrayals weren’t too terribly surprising either. Still great reading though.
I will say I can’t wait for the big showdown that’s bound to happen at some point, but I bet they’ll leave that for the fourth book.
Misty
I’m glad they did ruin the story for you overall. I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Klune at this point granted it’s only 4 books so far 2 of which are part of the same series. They’ve all been 5 stars for me though. I think he’s quickly becoming a favorite author for me.
I read the synopsis so I know what it’s going to intel but I can’t say here because it’s kind of spoilery for the events in this book. I just haven’t loved his character as much as I love the others but maybe this book will make me love him more. You’re going to have to message me on Instagram and remind me about the other betrayals. I’m racking my brain and I can literally not come up with the one main one.
Oh yeah I can almost guarantee the big showdown won’t happen until the 4th book but I’m really looking forward to it. I just hope all of my favorite characters survive.
Jonny
Couldn’t agree more! He’s super talented. I may not have liked one of his books, but I really loved every other one I’ve read, so I’d say that’s pretty darn good.
Ah, yes. No spoilers, pretty please! But I may creep over on GoodReads because now you’ve peaked my interest. Right, I kind of think of Robbie as a big dork lol. That’s at least how I saw him through Gordo’s eyes. Oh okay, I’ll definitely let you know on Insta. There are two, maybe three that I’m thinking of.
Right. I have a feeling before the end of this series someone important is gonna die, maybe more. Fingers crossed for Ox and Joe making it through to the end!
Misty
Which one did you not like again? I think it was one of the ones I’ve read but I can’t remember.
Umm don’t say that. None of them can die. I refuse to accept it.
Jonny
It was Under the Whispering Door. I just couldn’t really get into it like I did with this series of The House in the Cerulean Sea so I just DNF’d around a third of the way through.
Haha, knock on wood! For a second in this book I was worried about a number of characters biting the dust. So far that hasn’t happened but I’m getting nervous!
Misty
Yeah that’s one of the ones I’ve read and loved.
I admit I’m nervous too but I’ve decided to think they are all going to live and hopefully it becomes true by the end 🤣
Jonny
I’m super glad you did! 🙂
Yeah, that’s what I’m hoping for too. I read tons of horror, so it would be nice to have a nice positive ending for a change. No red wedding (GOT reference) allowed!
Well, I guess that about wraps this one up. I hope the Bennett pack keeps surviving these awful situations. We shall see soon! Looking forward to the next one with you bestie!
Misty
I love happy endings. Honestly I think 99% of what I read has happy endings. I know a lot of people will get that reference but not me.
Let’s hope they do!! 🤞🏻 I’m looking forward to reading the next one with you. Just let me know when you are ready to start it.
Jonny
I don’t mind any type of ending really, but too much of the same can be draining, especially with depressing endings.
Yeah, fingers crossed! I’ll be in touch soon!
That’s A Wrap!
