Book Review: The Collector (The Collector #1)

Hey Booksters!
How’s it hanging? I’m doing pretty good. Just trying to read as much as I can before my last semester of grad school starts and my schedule gets super crazy.
Oh, did I mention I have a new book out? It’s perfect if you like chills and thrills. You can check that out here.
Anywho, it’s time for another book review! This time I read The Collector (The Collector #1) by K.R. Alexander.
I chose this book as a result of a reading slump. I must’ve started five or so books before I finally settled on this one. I just couldn’t find a gripping first page until this one. I originally found a copy of this at a local thrift store, and I’m glad I bought it because otherwise I’d be a very sad Jonny.
All right, let’s see how this one went!
Blurb
A spooky doll story filled with thrills and chills, for fans of Mary Downing Hahn and Neil Gaiman.
Josie always liked visiting her grandmother’s house. But when she’s forced to move there, she starts to feel like something is a little . . . off. Her grandmother has some very strange rules:Never leave your windows open after dark.No dolls in the house.Never, ever go by the house in the woods.A little spooked, Josie is relieved to find that her school seems pretty normal. She even manages to make friends with a popular girl named Vanessa. When Vanessa invites Josie back to her house to hang out, Josie doesn’t question it. Not even when Vanessa takes her into the woods, and down an old dirt road, toward the very house her grandmother had warned her about . . .The house that has been calling for her.

The Review

Wow, this is how you do a middle grade novel! This book was spooky and mysterious, and I loved every second of it.
Josie always loved visiting her grandma in a small town surrounded by woods, but when she’s forced to move there it’s torture. Her grandma has all these crazy rules, and she keeps telling her to stay away from the woods. But why, and what are those strange nights coming from the woods at night? As Josie struggles to adjust to her new life, she becomes entangled in a terrifying series of events that will change everything she thought she knew.
Josie is the main character, and she’s a mix of kind, curious, and spunky. I loved how these traits worked together for her character. She puts her best foot forward with manners, but she’s got a spark of attitude that keeps her interesting from page to page. Her interactions with her mom, little sister Anna, and Anna felt very real and three-dimensional.
And the writing? It was so fluid and smooth that it was hard to put it down.
The mystery, fantasy, and paranormal elements to this story were great. They all complimented each other and came together in a surprising way. There’s some nice little scares and reveals along the way, but nothing too terrifying for a young reader. I honestly have no complaints, except that I only learned there was a second novel halfway through reading this one.
I’ve gotta have more!
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!
Have you read this book? Are there other similar books you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!

This sounds soooo good! And I’ve discovered I really enjoy spooky middle grade books.
Oh, I highly recommend this one! I’m reading the 2nd one right now. It’s great if you hate creepy dolls, which I do lol.
