Book Review: Slewfoot – A Tale of Bewitchery

Hello witches and warlocks,

Are you ready for another book review? I sure hope so, because today I’m reviewing the highly rated Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery by Brom

Ever since this book came out I’ve wanted to read it, but with a TBR as crazy as mine, great books can sometimes get shuffled to the background unintentionally. My book bestie Misty and I wanted to pick something that fit women’s history month, and what better theme than witches? This post is my individual review of the book, soon to be followed by a buddy ready convo between Misty and I.

Alright, let’s see how this book ended up!

Blurb

Set in Colonial New England, Slewfoot is a tale of magic and mystery, of triumph and terror as only dark fantasist Brom can tell it.

A spirited young Englishwoman, Abitha, arrives at a Puritan colony betrothed to a stranger – only to become quickly widowed when her husband dies under mysterious circumstances. All alone in this pious and patriarchal society, Abitha fights for what little freedom she can grasp onto, while trying to stay true to herself and her past.

Enter Slewfoot, a powerful spirit of antiquity newly woken … and trying to find his own role in the world. Healer or destroyer? Protector or predator? But as the shadows walk and villagers start dying, a new rumor is whispered: Witch.

Both Abitha and Slewfoot must swiftly decide who they are, and what they must do to survive in a world intent on hanging any who meddle in the dark arts.

Complete with 8 pages of Brom’s mesmerizing full-color artwork and chapter illustrations throughout, his latest book is sure to delight.

The Review

I absolutely adored this book!

In the time of the Puritan colonies, a young woman named Abitha lives a humdrum life with her fatherlike husband Edward. They earn their keep on a small farm outside of the nearby town of Sutton, but strange things begin to happen and Abitha’s world is turned upside down when she finds herself haunted by a strange spirit. As she struggles against her community’s overbearing way of life and her need to understand what the spirit wants, she embarks on a dark journey that will change everything she’s ever known.

Abitha really made this book relatable and was a perfect main character. She wasn’t raised on Puritan beliefs, and I love how much she resisted their pious ways. She has a curious and wild spirit that refused to be tamed, and I loved that about her. She had a lot of progression throughout the novel, dealing with grief and betrayal.

Special mention goes to the Puritans and Wallace. They were despicable, cruel, and overly pious individuals, and I was egging for a brutal comeuppance every single page. Sometimes it’s humans that are the real monsters.

The character Samson was an enigma that was exciting to follow. He is central to the story and I loved the more magical side of things that we got to see.

Speaking of magic, the plot has plenty of it. Some of it is subtle, especially starting out, but it doesn’t shy aware from taking things up a notch when stuff hits the fan. There were chills, thrills, and magic at every turn and I couldn’t get enough. The one thing I should warn readers is that there is animal death in this one, and one in particular really hurt my heart a bit, so I just shaved a little off of my rating for that.

Otherwise, this is a perfect read for any lover of magic, witches, and historical fiction. Highly recommend!
