Book Review: Video Night

Good Morning, Bibliophiles!
Man, I’ve been busy lately! With now three writing projects going (more on that in a separate post if I can find the time), a full time job, and Planet Comicon, I’ve been feeling a little exhausted .
So for this book review I wanted to relax and go back to my love of creature features. Today’s book review is for Video Night by Adam Cesare.
Cesare is a big name in books, and I’ve always wanted to try out some of his work. Knowing that he made a creature feature, I just couldn’t resist digging into this one.
Let’s see how it went!
Blurb
Who knows more about fighting a monster invasion than a group of teenage horror fans?
Billy Rile is smart, adept at Nintendo and has a killer Hi-Fi setup. Life is good. But he has no idea that an alien life form has infected his town, a creature that overtakes and transforms its host.
It could be inside a classmate, a pizza delivery man, even the girl next door. When Billy’s weekly movie night is crashed by this otherworldly menace, he and his best friend and their dates will have to summon their courage and call upon all their horror movie knowledge if they’re going to make it through Video Night alive.

The Review

This was a solid and engaging creature feature.
Set in the 80s, a small town is plagued by an unknown contagion. Citizens in town begin to act strangely, and a group of teens struggles to find out what is happening. As time dwindles and their lives are put in danger, they’ll have to fight tooth and nail just to stay alive. If they’re lucky…
Nostalgia can be a strong factor for me with reads, and this one is no exception. I loved all the great 80s references like the video store, politics, and the turns of phrase in dialogue.
I also really enjoyed the characters. Billy was a great white knight type, Tom the rebellious bad boy, and Rachel the intelligent girl with heart to match. There was plenty of progression with Billy and Rachel, and that helped keep me invested in the story.
This book was written in multiple viewpoints and can hop heads from section to section. Some might not prefer that, but I thought it was refreshing and enjoyed the many POVs, even the ones outside of the main characters.
I loved the scifi element of the book. It was mysterious and slowly gave you clues as to how things worked so that by the end I had a pretty good understanding. Each chapter was filled with action, teen angst, and plenty of gore where appropriate.
If I had to quip at anything, I would say that this book didn’t quite sucker punch me like I wanted it to, but if you love chills, thrills, and monsters, you can’t go wrong with this one.
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. Like what you see? Leave a tip!
