Movie Review: Djinn (2013)

Howdy Cinephiles,

For Arab American Heritage Month, I thought it might be difficult to find films I’d be interested in, but this one immediately grabbed my attention.

I love spooky spirits and mayhem, so I just dove right in. Let’s see how it went!

The Review

I’ve got to say, I was fairly impressed with this film!

An ailing couple Salama and Khalid decide to make a life-altering move to the UAE after their child dies. However, nothing is normal from the second they get there, and strange happenings occur at the hotel they find themselves living in that was built over a supposedly cursed place.

I just loved the atmosphere of this film. I’m not familiar with the UAE, but I loved how different everything was. The arid landscape, the cityscapes I got to see, the beautiful architecture. It all felt so refreshing and I loved it.

There’s an ever present tension in this film scene by scene that doesn’t let up, and that kept me on the edge of my seat. The supernatural element was great. There’s a backstory that pretty much explains what djinn are, but man are these entities powerful! They have a host of wicked abilities, and you get to see them expand their supernatural flex over time. After watching this film, I hope I never run into one of these beings!

At the heart of this film is Salama and Khalid. They’ve been through a lot of trauma, and their relationship is suffering as a result. There is some secrecy about the past, and I didn’t see some of the bigger twists coming. However, I would’ve liked to know them on a deeper level as individuals. Most of what we see is surface level.

Another thing I didn’t like was how abrupt the ending was, but overall this is still a solid horror film I think any horror lover will enjoy. Give it a go!

  1. Not familiar with the film, but I’m familiar with the legend of the djinn. Would love to watch this soon. 🌻

    • Me too. I’ve always been interested in the djinn, so this was a way to see how it was interpreted. I actually found a free version on YouTube and watched it there.
