Book Review: Shadow Walker (Shadow Walker #1)

Hello Readers!

Man, it is such a crazy month for me! Lots of new changes have been happening on my end. A new job, newer car, new phone, and not enough time to read has me wishing for a vacation. But the magic of books is that it gives you a little break from reality, am I right?

Today I’m super pumped to share my review of Shadow Walker (Shadow Walker #1) by Jina Bazzar

Jina and I go way back. I did an interview with her back in 2022 (you can check that out hereand loved picking her brain about her creative process. But as I continued book blogging my TBR got super out of control. Luckily, my book buddy Misty helped me remember her Shadow Walker series, and we’re reading it together!

This post will be my individual review of this book, soon to be followed by a read and rant convo between me and Misty. Alright, enough talk. Let’s get into the review!

When secrets are deadly, how far would you go to protect them?

A century ago, my family stood at the pinnacle of the magical world, the cornerstone of the mage community. But then came the plague and war, ravaging the world. When the dust settled, the mage Houses emerged from hiding and divided the remaining resources.

Now, I live on the fringes of society, stealing to support my aunt and brother. But today, everything is about to change. With the end of the term and a chance to work for the best firm not controlled by supernaturals, life is finally looking up.
Except when things seem too good to be true, they usually are.

Blackmailed and cornered, I have no choice but to pull off one last heist. Success means revealing my forbidden magic, but failure could cost the lives of everyone I love.

This is an updated edition of Shadow Walker. It’s packed with magic and action, perfect for readers who enjoy a strong yet flawed female lead. Dive into the first installment of this thrilling, action-packed four-book series, ideal for fans of K. M. Shea, Lindsay Buroker, Annabel Chase, Shannon Mayer, and many more!

The Review

This action-packed fantasy book was awesome!

Melaina lives with her brother Aiden and aunt. She used to make a living by using her flame and shadow abilities to pull off near impossible heists. She’s recently turned a new leaf and is dedicated to her education and doing things the right way, but when her family becomes ensnared in a plot by one of the ruling Houses, she has no choice but to pull off her biggest heist yet, one that will change everything she knows about her world.

The worldbuilding in this book was phenomenal! I loved the alternate history of her Earth. Magic was brought into her world over a century ago, irrevocably changing it and establishing a new world order. I loved learning about the Houses and the myriad abilities they use to rule, and though the beginning had a lot of information to digest, it was all very exciting.

Melaina was everything I want in an MC: courageous, smart, and ambitious. Despite the walls she’s built around her heart, she truly cares about her family and the good people around her, and that had me rooting for her from beginning to end.

Every chapter had plenty of action and plot developments with some nice pauses in between. I especially loved the superpowered battles that happened throughout, and there’s a consistent mystery underneath it all that kept my eyes glued to the page.

If you love action-packed fantasy, superpowers, and deadly heists, you’re gonna love this one!
