Book Review: Sleeping Giants (Themis Files #1)

Greetings, readers of our little blue planet!

After my last read of Frost Bite, I wanted to keep going with my scifi-themed reads. I looked around at all the unfinished books in my office (there are many!) and instantly thought Sleeping Giants (Themis Files #1) by Sylvain Neuvel would be a fun one to try out.

I’ve never read anything by this author but grabbed a copy of this book maybe a year or so ago at a thrift store, so I just had to see if this was worth keeping around.

Let’s see how it went!

Blurb

A girl named Rose is riding her new bike near home in Deadwood, South Dakota, when she falls through the earth. She wakes up at the bottom of a square-shaped hole, its walls glowing with intricate carvings. But the firemen who come to save her peer down upon something even stranger: a little girl in the palm of a giant metal hand.

Seventeen years later, the mystery of the bizarre artifact remains unsolved – the object’s origins, architects, and purpose unknown.

But some can never stop searching for answers.

Rose Franklin is now a highly trained physicist leading a top-secret team to crack the hand’s code. And along with her colleagues, she is being interviewed by a nameless interrogator whose power and purview are as enigmatic as the relic they seek. What’s clear is that Rose and her compatriots are on the edge of unravelling history’s most perplexing discovery-and finally figuring out what it portends for humanity. But once the pieces of the puzzle are in place, will the result be an instrument of lasting peace or a weapon of mass destruction?

The Review

I love books that surprise you, and this book did just that for me.

One day a young girl named Rose uncovers a large robotic hand near her home. Years after the incident she and others study the artifact, desperate to figure out how such an advanced technological find could have been created thousands of years ago. As they search for answers, their findings and the struggle against other governments will change the world forever.

There was something about the style this was written in that I just loved. This book uses an interview style format to move things along, and I loved how each chapter give me tiny hints about the ancient robot and insight into the main characters as they are tested time and time again.

Rose starts out as the main character, but there is also Kara, Vincent, Ryan, and other smaller support characters that I got to follow around. I loved how snarky and scrappy Kara was, and Rose taking a maternal role in her involvement with the others really shone through. Each of them are in the same impossible situation, and they reacted and adapted in their own unique ways individually.

I also really loved the pacing of this. There were slower chapters for buildup, but when events happen it’s really exciting and I couldn’t keep my eyes off the page. Highly, highly recommend if you love scifi and robots!

That’s A Wrap!
