Book Review: Birthday Party Demon

Hey Nostalgia Seekers,
I hope you’re having a lovely start to the fall season. I’m still in the beginning stages of getting ready, but my recent reads have been keeping that fall spirit alive.
Today I’m happy to be sharing my review of Birthday Party Demon by Wendy Dalrymple.
As you might be able to tell from the cover, this is a horror book set in the 90s, and if you know my blog then you know that nostalgia is a powerful pull for me. I’ve never read anything by this author, but I was fiending for some creepy 90s vibes so here we are!
Alright, let’s see how this read went!
Blurb
BFFs Tina, Eve, and Lacey come together for a Sweet 16 slumber party that goes sideways when they accidentally summon more than a good time.
After Lacey becomes possessed and traps her friends in a fashion catalog, Tina and Eve must find their way out of a totally fabulous new world before the demon overtakes Lacey’s body completely.
Wendy Dalrymple’s YA pink-horror novella is a 90s fever dream that marries the witchy vibe of The Craft with the campy flavor of Jennifer’s Body and a neon splash of My Best Friend’s Exorcism.

The Review

Loved it! This 90s horror novella was all that and a bag of chips!
Tina’s about to have her sweet sixteen party, but she’s nervous. A distance has been growing between her and her friends Eve and Lacey. To her surprise they agree and the same comradery they always had is in full effect, but as the birthday shenanigans commence they will soon embark on a dark path that will change their friendship forever.
The biggest draw for this story was the 90s vibe for me. I grew up in the 90s, and while I wasn’t privy to all of the references since this focuses on the teenage girl mindset, almost all of the references still landed. I also liked that I wasn’t beaten over the head with the references. They were subtle but ever present.
I really liked Tina as the main character. She’s got your typical teen worries, but with an added secret that kept things interesting. Eve and Lacey were great supporting characters and had distinct personalities that set them apart. All the dialogue was great and felt very real.
Each chapter had fast moving developments that kept me engaged, and I loved all the creepy happenings spread throughout. It was a unique mix of horror, paranormal, and fantasy genres that really worked well together, and this definitely won’t be my last read by this author.
Highly recommend!

Yay! I’ve never heard the term “pink horror” before but I gotta say, I’m hooked! I hope you love this one!
