Book Review: Sovereign (Sovereign #1)

Hi Readers!
This year is just flying by, huh? I can’t believe Planet Comicon has come and gone already. I spent some time at a shared booth with other local authors that inspired my book choice today, Sovereign (Sovereign #1) by AJ Whitney.
I first met AJ last year at a library author event, and we became fast friends. We even got to man the booth together at Planet Comicon. So after hearing them give their pitch to prospective customers, I had to see what is was all about for myself!
On to the book review!

Number 332 is living to be sacrificed.
A teen with no name, she and nine other Orphans will be left in the Fields as gifts, and the town will be blessed with a decade of bountiful harvests — just as they have for the past three centuries.
But after so long, even the town Elders begin to question the decennial Sending and the very existence of the gods they worship.
What will happen to the isolated little village if they stop believing? 332 could have a life of her own, one not promised to the unknown Sovereign.
And yet, maybe the legends are true after all. Maybe the scrawled message that sealed 332’s fate along with the hundreds of others who came before her is still to be heeded.
Every 10 years.

The Review

Wow, what a refreshing dystopian novel!
Orphan number 332 lives in an orphan home in a small village, separated from the public. She and her fellow orphans are meant for greater things, but they’ve never been told what. As she hears whispers among the adults, she gleans their true purpose, finding a truth that will shake her world to its core.
My favorite thing about this book was the unique take on the dystopian genre. Usually it’s something futuristic, but in this lens it’s more regressive. That made the experience more exciting.
This story is told in two POVs, that of 332 and of a former leader of the village centuries past. The juxtaposition of these POVs was really great and gave greater understanding overall that I really appreciated. Great worldbuilding!
332 and her fellow orphans were great characters to follow around. They each had their own unique personality and depth that shines through as things develop.
The mystery behind everything was the main plot focus, and it kept me on the edge of my seat. I had to know the fate that was in store for the orphans, and the ending left me surprised and excited for the next novel.
Can’t wait to read more!
That’s A Wrap!
