Book Review: Death Takes a Holiday

Hello Top Worlders!

I’ve got a special treat for today’s post, and that’s a new book from one of my favorite authors!

Today’s all about Death Takes a Holiday by Tammie Painter, but before we get into that, can I just say how big of a fan I am of Tammie?

We’ve been friends for a very long time, and I’ve read a good majority of her works. She has this incredible talent for crafting whimsical mysteries that make you laugh and pull at your heartstrings. I’m one of her ARC readers, and I was so excited to give this a try!

On to the book review!

Death is bored. Immortality will do that to you.

** A hilarious new series from the author of The Cassie Black Trilogy! **

After an eternity of escorting souls to the afterlife, Death — who really prefers you call him Mortimer — is bored. There’s been departmental divisions, technical developments, and fitness crazes that mean people just aren’t dying like they used to.

What’s worse… He’s running low on romance novels to keep himself occupied.

His solution: a working holiday to Top World, where he expects room service, infinity-high thread counts, and an easy solution to get business booming again.

What he doesn’t expect is Mrs Morris, a seventy-three-year-old detective with a tightly packed schedule that leaves no room for an immortal assistant.

But Mortimer refuses to go away. After all, detectives find murderers, and having his very own killer would be the perfect way to nudge up those mortality rates.

Luckily, someone’s just been murdered — and Mrs Morris has been hired to find the culprit. The only trouble? The victim reeks of demons, turning Mortimer’s perfect opportunity into a great deal of trouble that could end his career. Oh, and the human race.

The Review

Coffee, pastries, and death, oh my! I truly loved this gem of a book.

You wouldn’t think Death (aka Mortimer) would ever get bored with everything that goes on around Earth, but you’d be wrong. Longer lifespans, predictable romance novels, and general restlessness have Death going on a vacation. As he looks for adventure, he stumbles upon a sleuthing senior citizen Mrs. Morris. Hoping she can lead him to a murderer that will reinvigorate his tedious existence, he gets far more than he bargained for.

This book is a perfect example of what you can expect from the illustrious Tammie Painter: puns a plenty, mystery with lots of twists and turns, and mouthwatering food descriptions!

Mortimer was enigmatic and interesting to figure out. I loved his odd view of our world and learning about the Under World. He’s definitely got a lot to learn, and it was a ton of fun getting to watch his adventures. I love a snarky character, and Mrs. Morris ticks all of the boxes. She’s got a guarded heart and a schedule with little time for anyone, which made the duo unlikely and refreshing.

The plot of this book moves fast and shifts between Mortimer and Mrs. Morris’s point of view, the majority belonging to Mortimer. There were a lot of great clues along the way, some of them red herrings, some of them legit, and it was a struggle for me to figure out who was responsible for all the mayhem. Zero complaints with this book. It’s to die for.

  1. Um, so thanks for the review, but Ajax just sent me a message and says he is very angry about not being featured in this post, especially since he “makes an AMAZING Grim Reaper” (his words, not mine). He was also asking about what brand of scythes are sharpest, so, yeah, you might want to sleep with one eye open for a while : ) But really, thanks for the wonderful words!!!

    • Hahaha! That would explain why he’s been giving me the cold shoulder. I’ll have to let him collect a few souls to make it up to him lol. Absolutely! I had a friggin blast!
