Ah, Saturday mornings.

That blissful time of the weekend where you can wake up and say, you know what, world? No. I’m gonna sit here and finish this book. Just try and stop me!

And that’s just what I did this morning, finishing up my read of Rogue Protocol, the third installment in the Murderbot series by Martha Wells.

I bought this book and Artificial Condition after reading All Systems Red, which completely stunned and amazed me by how amazing it was.

All right, time for the review!

Man, this book was great!

Continuing from Artificial Condition, our beloved Murderbot is determined to get out of dodge and live a peaceful existence. That is, until it sees a news story about the evil corporation GrayCris, the very same one that nearly killed Dr. Mensah and her team in All Systems Red.

According to the story, GrayCris is abandoning a ‘terraforming facility’ on a remote world, and Murderbot isn’t buying it for a second. Determined to find evidence of further evil dealings against GrayCris and deliver them to Dr. Mensah, Murderbot springs into action.

I loved this book! This was a great continuation of the series, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

The plot was more appealing than ever. Dr. Mensah’s claims against GrayCris are floundering, and with a chance to help her, Murderbot doesn’t hesitate. The whole goal of this one tied in closely with the first book, which I thought was great. Murderbot has to be stealthy, two-faced, and increasingly smart if it’s going to pull this one off, and it rises to the challenge.

Flow was great too. The ambience was super scifi and creepy too. Certain scenes gave an ambience of the Alien films (yes, I’ve recently rewatched all of those films, what’s your point?) and had my hairs standing on end.

To top it off, Murderbot is, well, Murderbot. I lived for Murderbot’s snarky attitude, and there were several instances where I literally laughed out loud at its thought process, especially the f bombs. There’s also a bit of character progression here, and I feel that at this point, Murderbot is so complex and enthralling I just can’t fathom quitting this series until it’s final end, whenever that may be.

The only fault I really had with this book was what happened to the character Wilken (don’t worry, no spoilers). This character seemed to drop off the face of the planet near the end, and I couldn’t figure it out.

I even went back to the last reference point and still couldn’t find anything. I think it’s something of a minor plot hole, but something that I should note.

Other than that, this book was flawless and as always, rich in detail.

All in all, Rogue Protocol was a riveting continuation of the Murderbot series that overloaded my circuits. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
