Book Review: Creep from the Deep (Goosebumps HorrorLand #2)

Avast, ye landlubbers!
How’s your January going? It’s smooth sailing on my end, pun intended! Recently I started buddy reading this series with my book bestie Misty, and we just had to have more Goosebumps, so today I’m reviewing Creep from the Deep (Goosebumps HorrorLand #2) by R.L. Stine.
This book may have been a reference to an OG Goosebumps book, but if it was it was totally lost on me, so I just jumped right in. This post today is my individual review, then Misty and I will soon be posting a spoiler light conversation on our thoughts.
Alright, time to get this boat a rockin!

The Review

Meh, this book was just okay for me. I’m a total fanboy of Goosebumps, but some things just didn’t add up.
Let’s start with the cover. It’s pretty misleading and the creature shown isn’t a central villain in the book. I had a similar complaint with the OG Night of the Living Dummy because the vast majority of the book was not about Slappy but his face was on the cover.
This book is about two kids Billy and Sheena and their adventure with their uncle to find a long forgotten shipwreck at the bottom of the ocean. They get more than they bargained for and must fight for their lives against dark forces that spawn from their discoveries along the way.
I have some mixed feelings about Billy. He’s very imaginative and I can totally relate to that, but sometimes he would exaggerate things too far and then take it back. I didn’t like that very much because it seemed like a ploy to give the end of a chapter a good scare. Sheena was fine honestly. Bratty little sister vibes and she seemed really consistent.
The plot seemed like it was trying too hard. Each chapter was entertaining and set a fast pace, but the book is trying to do too much in too little time so the explanations along the way fell kinda flat for me. Like the first book in this series, the HorrorLand aspect felt like something of an afterthought, and though it tied in the characters from the previous book it also felt a bit flat.
If you’re a sucker for Goosebumps like me you might still want to give this a try. Otherwise, this one might be skippable in the overall scheme of things.
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. Like what you see? Leave a tip!
