Buddy Reads & Rants: Monster Blood For Breakfast! (Jonny Pongratz & Misty’s Book Space)

Hello Blogging World!

Jonny

I’m Jonny, and I don’t want no dang slime in my breakfast! Gross!

Misty

Hi I’m Misty and I’d have to agree.

This buddy read convo is all about Monster Blood For Breakfast! (Goosebumps HorrorLand #3) by R.L. Stine.

Blurb

For an athlete like Matt Daniels, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s also the most dangerous. That’s because somebody is about to pull a mean prank. The recipe is Just add gooey, green Monster Blood. As if Matt’s problems weren’t big and slimy enough, an invitation to HorrorLand is also on its way. Can How long can Matt survive inside a terrifying theme park? Not very long if his friends keep disappearing!

Buddy Read Book Rant:

Misty

Ok Jonny we are 3 books into this series now, how are you feeling about it?

Jonny

Oh man … I’ve gotta say that I am really disappointed in this series so far. Each book seems to get worse and I really didn’t enjoy this one.

Misty

I’d have to agree. I’ve never read the original Goosebumps series so I can’t comment on that but this one isn’t what I was expecting. I said it before but I feel like I would have loved them if I read them when I was younger but they aren’t working for me as an adult.

Jonny

Yeah, it’s really sad. I’ve read a lot of the OG Goosebumps and the books in this series aren’t even close to as much fun as those were. At this point, I’d really like to move on to something else for our next buddy read. That being said, were there any positives for you with this story? I say that because almost everything I have to say isn’t very nice lol

Misty

I don’t really have anything really negative or really positive to say about it. It was meh for me. I will say I still stand by the fact that the author does a great job at making me angry on behalf of certain characters.

Jonny

I understand. Good point! He definitely did make me upset, mainly on Matt’s behalf. His frenemy Bradley was awful, which made him a good villain. Honestly I felt really irked most of the time. Like no one would ever listen to Matt about anything and kept interrupting him. It felt like it was being used as a plot device, but I was just like Matt needs new parents basically, haha!

Misty

Yes Bradley was awful. He did the same thing in this one that he did in the last one where the bad kid was always getting the good kid in trouble and none of the adults would see or hear anything despite being in the same room. So freaking frustrating.

Jonny

Right? And I get that in the time period of the OG Goosebumps kids may have gotten away with that, but this is set in more modern times and just didn’t feel really believable. The HorrorLand section of the book still feels like an afterthought, but I honestly liked it more than the main story.

Misty

Yeah I’m still not understanding the HorrorLand aspect of it. Right now it just feels like we are getting 2 separate stories in one.

Jonny

Totally. It’s just not syncing up very well. Well hey, no one can say we didn’t give this series the ole college try. We’re just not vibing and there are so many great books out there to explore.

Misty

Yeah they don’t seem to connect at all right now aside from having the same characters and I’m not curious enough to want to keep reading to find out. Yes I think 3 books is more than enough to know whether the series is going to be for us or not and as much as I hate to do this since I bought the first 10 books I’m going to DNF it. Might see if a friend of mine wants them for her son. And yes there are so many book options out there and surely we can find one we enjoy more.

Jonny

Yeah, I feel the same way. Aw, that’s so sweet of you! I think a younger audience might like them. Yes, I’m excited for our next great read! I just know we’ll find something amazing.

Misty

Thanks for giving this one a go with me. Despite not loving the books I still had fun buddy reading them with you.

Jonny

Always happy to read with you bestie!
