Book Review: Dreamcrusher (Replica #19)

Hiya Book Worms,
How’s your December shaping up so far? Are you reading any winter-themed books I should know about?
I’ve been enjoying a simplified normal without grad school for the moment, so I don’t have anything to report. That means it’s time to dig into another book review!
This time I read Dreamcrusher (Replica #19) by Marilyn Kaye.
Alright, so I really liked the last book in the series. Talk about epic! But I dove into this one a little wary given the pattern of bad and good. Let’s see how it did!

Blurb
A sudden storm at an end-of-summer, back-to-school party sends Amy scrambling for cover–but a bolt of lightning hits her as she runs. Next thing she knows, she wakes up in a hospital emergency room. Everything’s fine. Or is it? Suddenly Amy can hear more than she’d like to. She can see things that disturb her. In fact, all her senses are on edge. At first Amy thinks it’s way cool to have extrasensory abilities–until they become more like a curse than a gift. Now she just wants to shut them down for good!

The Review

It feels wrong to give this such a low rating, but I’ve got some valid reasons for doing so.
Okay, so in a nutshell Amy is hanging out on the beach when she gets struck by lightning. She wakes up in the hospital feeling relatively normal. That is, until she discovers she can hear peoples’ thoughts. What’s happening to Amy? Can she make this stop, or could this be a new weapon against the organization?
Focusing on this book as a standalone, it’s not horrible. It’s got mystery and some good twists and turns. The writing is just as fluid as ever as well. The only problem is a little thing called continuity.
You see, in the last book some seriously epic things happened, things that can and should not be ignored. But that’s exactly what this book did. Rather than give us information about the aftermath of book #18, we get zero references to the catastrophic happening and Amy just continues on like nothing happened. This wasn’t realistic at all.
At the very least, Amy should have had conversations with her mother, Tasha, and Dr. Dave about what happened and next steps that need to happen, perhaps even more meetings with the other clones (which by the way, we have no idea where they went). Things have ramped up with the organization, so why wouldn’t they talk about it? It makes no sense.
Also, the characters didn’t really shine here. Tasha is extremely selfish with Amy’s new ability and the issue isn’t properly addressed. Amy doesn’t have any lingering thoughts about the organization, which, given the amount of danger she’s in doesn’t make sense, and Eric is still acting like some stranger without any real explanation as to why he suddenly turned a new leaf besides entering high school.
This just felt extremely sloppy, and to be honest, it upset me. I can understand not wanting to make this series dark like the Animorphs got, but then why did they write #18? I just don’t get it.
That’s A Wrap!
Well that’s it for this book review. I hope you enjoyed it!
Have you read this book? Are there other similar books you’ve read that you simply have to gush about? Feel free to leave a comment. I’d love to start a conversation!
Have a great day!
